Jayant Shravah

This week's Sailor of the Week photo is not for the squeamish. It depicts Jayant Shravah after having freshly sliced his finger on his first time out on a wind powered vessel. His injuries were minor, but still beg the question, "Why do we sail?". For many of us, sailing is a powerful release from the stresses of dailing living; from traffic, work, responsibilites, offering a time when the only necessary thoughts are those relating to safely and precisely controlling your boat. It's a feeling we're all grateful to experience and share, and part of what makes the UBC Sailing Club so great. We caught up with Jay a few days after his injury for an update.

UBC: Hey Jay, how's the finger?
Jayant: It's healing up real good. Five stitches. I get 'em out Friday.

UBC: How'd it happen anyways?
Jayant: I'm not sure. It was a clean slice that happened climbing back into the boat during a capsize drill.

UBC: Have you had any back luck like this sailing before?
Jayant: That was actually my first time sailing.

UBC: Ouch. I hope it hasn't dampened your spirits at all.
Jayant: Not at all. I'ts only made me want to try harder.

UBC: What made you want to try sailing in the first place?
Jayant: I was going to try kayaking, but was influenced by my best labmate to try sailing, plus it looks much cooler.

UBC: Great. Will we see you at the party this Saturday?
Jayant: Definitely!
