Lillian Zaremba

We caught up with this weeks Sailor of the Week as she was derigging her skiff after an afternoon of flying the spinnaker on a beautiful full sunshine day. UBC sailing is lucky to have this lady dedicating her many talents to the club.

UBC: How long have you been sailing Lillian?
Lillian: Since I was old enough to wear a life jacket. About age 2 or 3 on my parent's boat.

UBC: And how long with UBC?
Lillian: I moved out here in '99 to start my masters in Civil Engineering. I joined the UBC Sailing club to meet some people that weren't engineers, but everyone was an engineer! Even though I sailed as a kid, my sailing has really taken off since joining the club.

UBC: Any highlights or adventure stories you'd like to share about your time with the club?
Lillian: Multiple Keat's trips. We've made the trip in two and a half hours double trapezeing on a Narca. The trip home was under three hours with some great rollers this year. But there was also the two demastings.

UBC: Yikes! Whose to blame for that?
Lillian: The boat! It happened once on the way there and we had to get towed to Bowen and managed to fix it, and once on the way back. That time it was a key part so we had to get towed home by the keelboat.

UBC: Do you do much keelboating?
Lillian: I finished my intermediate cruising in 2008 and have done some really memorable sailing with my family in Croatia. I just need to get a bit more confortable with docking. UBC Sailing used to organize some informal trips to sailing destinations, but the key people behind that have since graduated and moved away.

UBC: Any favourite sailing partners?
Lillian: I could narrow it down to a handful, but I'd be afraid of forget to mention people.

UBC: Are you planning on sticking around for a while?
Lillian: I love UBC sailing and want to be in the club for as long as possible.
